The growth and loss of hair depends on the activity of the hair follicle. Normally, the scalp looses 50 to 100 hairs per day which are replaced by new hairs. The normal life cycle of hair is divided in 3 phases:

1. Anagen: phase of birth and development.

a. Action: the follicle produces the hair, which grows an average of 1cm per month.

b. Duration: 2 to 7 years for women and 2 to 4 years for men.

2. Catagen: involution phase.

a. Action: the follicle stops producing hair which will fall out. The bulb reduces its normal diameter by a third.
